Body condition scoring for range cattle just got easier. University of Wyoming Extension released a 3-step scoring system that can help producers determine cattle body condition scores.

Derek Scasta is one of the authors and a UW Extension range specialist. He collaborated with Scott Lake, a beef specialist from UW Extension for this project. The goal was to figure out how to streamline cattle scoring so it would apply to decisions regarding range and management.

The best times to score cattle are prior to calving, before breeding, and at weaning. Scasta says the 3-step guide “is an easy-to-use and practical approach to determining body condition scores of cattle and will assist ranchers in making management decisions.” You can search for the publication here.
