Presenting the Best of Simmons Says
(By Dan Simmons)

This month marks not only the end of 2007, but also the 20th issue of <insert title> newsletter.  For almost two years we’ve done our best to provide practical and timely career advice for hiring managers on recruiting, recognizing, rewarding and retaining top talent.  We hope that we’ve achieved what we set out to accomplish.

We’ve been very pleased by the feedback that we’ve received from readers since we began <insert title>.  That feedback has been thoughtful, full of insight, and extremely helpful in guiding us through our growing process.  In addition, your feedback has allowed us to select the “best of” our newsletter during the first 20 issues.

The “best of” consists of previous articles (although some, which were originally published as a series, are being presented in their entirety now).  The articles that we chose are listed below.  We have arranged them in such a way that they provide a how-to guide on recruiting and retention.  For the entire e-book, which contains all 10 articles, click here.

  1. Planning—The Key to Quality Talent Acquisition (May,2006)
Quality candidates—where are they, how can you get them, and how can you keep them?

  2. Know Your Company’s 30-Second Story (July, 2006)
Presenting your company as the very best option for a person's career

  3. Why ‘WIIFM’ is the Most Important Recruiting Technique (March, 2007)
How to get prospective candidates to fall in love with your opportunity

  4. Create More Time to Hire the Right Candidates (June, 2006
    Streamlining your interview process

  5. Consider the Resume, Hire for the Behaviors (May, 2007)
Choosing the behaviors needed to accomplish and exceed expectations

  6. Behavioral-Based Interviewing and the STAR Approach (June, 2007)
Using the STAR interviewing approach (Situation, Task, Action, & Result) to choose top talent.

  7. The ‘WOW! Factor’ (August, 2006)
Making the employment offer they can't refuse

  8. Onboarding: Worth the Investment (July, 2007)
Acclimating new employees into their jobs so they become productive more quickly

  9. Creating a Successful Onboarding Program (August, 2007)
The components involved in an onboarding program (people, content, and timeframe)

  10. What Would It Be Like If Work and Life Were in Balance? (September, 2007)Increase retention through strategies revolving around work/life balance

Once again, thanks very much for being a loyal reader of Simmons Says.  And remember, we want to know what interests you.  If you have suggestions for future topics, please be sure to send them to us for consideration.  We’re currently putting together our articles for the first half of next year, and we’d love your input and feedback.

We wish you the best during this holiday season and hope that 2008 turns out to be your best year ever.  As always, if you’d like to contact me, send an email to dan@consearch.com
