Taiwan is composed of a mere 23 million people. Even so, Beef Magazine says that they remain one of the top destinations for US beef. Exports in 2017 reached a whopping $409.7 million and they still love it!
The first quarter of 2018 was 20% higher than last year. It reached 13,018 mt with an increase in value at 26% which earned us $126.4 million. Chilled exports went up to 25% at 5,712 mt. There was an increase in the value of 31% at $74 million.
“On the ground here in Taiwan, it’s easy to see that consumers, and the retailers and restaurants that serve that consumer base, have developed a clear preference for chilled U.S. beef,” says Joel Haggard. He is the U.S. Meat Export Federation senior vice president for the Asia Pacific region.
The US remains the largest overall supplier of beef in Taiwan with a staggering 45% of market share. It looks like we may also look towards a growing percentage of exports in the Taiwan market for years to come. “Taiwan looks really promising for future growth, as millennials and generation Z consumers love to eat beef, either as steaks, in Korean barbecue houses and hot-pot restaurants or even as burgers when they dine out – and they dine out often,” Haggard shares.
